100 Years of Philippine Sports
100 YEARS OF PHILIPPINE SPORTS:
A Synopsis

This book is about the legendary achievements of Filipino Athletes – from the Far Eastern Games to the Olympic Games, Asian Games and SEA Games and selected World Championships. We have countless men and women – both in the amateur and professional fields who have braved the odds and toiled hard to bring honor and glory to the country. Through records and photos, we also go down the memory lane when the Filipinos lorded it over its Asian neighbors in the field of basketball.

“100 Years” traces the beginning and continuity of organized sports in the Philippines and share with the readers all available photos of athletes in their winning moments, most of them unpublished to date. While we feel dutibound to share these photos to the readers, we also feel honored to relive these glorious moments when we feel proud to be Filipinos – whenever we, as a nation, shout with jubilation as our competing athlete or Philippine Team wins the match or game, and we share in the triumph of the Filipino Spirit.

Among the precious photos in the book are the following:

a. The “Islanders” Basketball Team in the XIth Olympics (Berlin) and photos
of Champion Philippine Basketball Team in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Asian Games;
b. RP Team, 3rd Place, 1958 World Basketball Championship (Rio de Janeiro);
c. Winning action photos of Simeon Toribio (high jump), Miguel White (athletics), Anthony Villanueva (boxing), Leopoldo Serrantes, (boxing), Roehl Velasco (boxing) and Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco (boxing) – in the Olympics.
d. Olympic delegation photos (Helsinki, Australia, etc.)
e. RP Team, 3rd Place, 1958 World Championship (Rio de Janeiro)
f. Most Asian Games gold, silver and bronze medalists (all sports)
g. Selected Gold SEA Games medalists.

“100 Years” will significantly solve the problems of national sports associations
(NSAs) of amateur sports (under the Philippine Olympic Committee) which, for some reason or another, have no records/file photos of their winning athletes.

This book also hopes to inspire excellence in the new and present Athletes by living the ideals and values exemplified by their predecessors; and in the Filipino Youth to reach for their dream and aspire for success in whatever field of endeavor. This way, they will take an active role in nation-building.
