100 Years of Philippine Sports
By Carmencita R.Velasco

Sports was introduced to the Philippines by American teachers in the late 1800s. The Bureau of Education and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) made the practice of sport widespread. To check the erosion of amateur sports, the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF) was organized in January 1911 with the American Governor-General as the first president.

The year 2011 thus marked the first centennial of Philippine sports.
